Search algorithm for age or history of the web site

If Google or any other search engine takes into account the age or history of a web site as part of its calculation for page rank, then we are all in big trouble.

The age of the web site and more specifically, its domain name, is very important and should be included because it can be an indication of how authoritative that site is for a keyword. For example a site that has been selling a particular product online for more than ten years will usually be more expert on that product line that one that has just selling.

But how can the search engine tell how old a web site is?

Usually by the domain name and by one of two methods... the first date that it was submitted to the search engine for spidering, and the date that the domain was registered. We now have to sets of records and will discuss them separately:

Using the date that the site was first spidered:

No joke, this gets a little confusing because some domains get registered and then expire only to be registered at a later date by someone new. So a domain can remain unregistered for several years before finding its way back online and any records of previous spidering should not be relevant. But what if spidering records were seen as continuous and without interruption? The problem here is that the domain could have expired and been snapped up by someone else within the scheduled period for a spider revisit.

Using the date the domain was first registered:

First big problem here is that due to spammers having easy access to domain lookups for email addresses, most professionally managed web sites now use cloaking of their whois records and that a lookup will only yield the expiry date.

Also, should a domain somehow be lost to someone else or a domain monetizer, then the term of ownership may not show as new. Or it may have been lost and then later redeemed in which case the domain has expired, changed ownership and then changed ownership back to the original owner.

Cheating both types of records:

If either of these ridiculous scenarios are in fact true then we have a bigger problem, because any usurper can purchase any domain name from that is older than that of their competitors and get ranked higher!

Some trivia:

- There is 121,253,000 domains currently registered as active (121 million)
- There have been 384,752,000 domains deleted from the registries (385 million)
- 77,000 new domains get registered each day
- 74,000 domain names expire each day

Well if Google is silly enough to think that they can get the information from a web page then they are in for a big surprise because I noticed a site the other day claiming that they were in business before me and when I did a whois of their domain name I confirmed as I suspected.. they started a few years after me. All of their web pages have at the top..
number one choice since 1997 :-)
