Search algorithm for repetition of key words in the body text

SEO consultants will check the keywords for a web page and then count the number of times that each keyword appears in the page text.

If this is indeed a selection criteria used by search engines it may explain why so many who are trying to cheat on that selection are making their product descriptions unreadable. And why so many obvious cheats are adding the same bank of keywords to the bottom of each web page.

When one sees a page prepared in this manner, the designers intention is quite obvious and exploring the rest of their site usually becomes a tedious task. Apparently there are penalties if a search engine detects that excessively repeated keywords do appear in the same colored font as the page background, but what about the obviously colored ones? Surely a search engine can no longer differentiate between a keyword list and gibberish where spam filters can not?

Our test team suggested that if a search engine can tell if the text color matches a page background, then it can also detect of the color matches a table background or table cell. But how can it tell if the text color matches a background image? Well, theoretically this is possible but it would require reading an image and determining the predominant areas of color. But this would not be possible at all if the image for example had 50% black and 50% white with white letters superimposed of the white portion of the image.

So the search engine is foiled again and any precautions taken for quality of search using this selection criteria is not only a waste of time, but can result in disasters.

But apparently both readings are only a myth. And I am certain that Google doesnt penalize repetition, otherwise one of my competitors would not be appearing higher ranked in results than me when they cheat so blatantly.

Frankly, I think that much of what we read and hear about Google is nothing but propaganda.
