Search algorithm for size of JavaScript used on a page

Page optimization tools provided by Google and SEO consultants check the JavaScript and CSS used on a web page and often recommend modifications to reduce the download size.

If one page uses two or more CSS style sheets then a recommendation may be made to combine the tow into one to reduce duplication of settings and thus deuce the download file size.

Likewise if more than one JavaScript inserts is used by a web page there will be a recommendation to not only combine the scripts into one file but to also compress the JavaScript. There are several online services that provide JavaScript compression from a web page where all you have to do is copy in the script and then copy the result for pasting back into your script.

Now why would a Search engine bother with CSS and JavaScript file size? Most search engines wouldn't bother because they actually ignore the CSS and scripts... they are of no use to them. But if Google does indeed improve the download speed of its web browsers by caching as many pages as it can then they in particular do have a huge problem and that is data cost and storage.

If this is the case then Google has first tried to impress us with a download speed trick and now we are paying for it because they penalizing us for what they need to store to maintain the deception. Not only is it selfish and deceiving, but it is also a gross inconvenience to every web site owner because the following reasons:

Different web pages may use different CSS style sheets. For example all pages may use the same font styles in their body but some pages may be using layers which use different CSS styles. If any of those pages are translated on the fly then the CSS styles for each language may differ, and probably about now you already feel like strangling the amateur at Google who wants to penalize you.

Now with JavaScript inserts its a similar problem but it gets worse, because not only do they want you to combine your JavaScripts into one insert file but they want you to compress it. By now you should feel like strangling that amateur and his whole family because once you compress a file you cannot edit it, which means that you need to keep an original file of each version and produce from it a compressed version to upload to the web site.

And this is where Googles naivety and inconsideration comes in... most professional are using FrontPage, Cold Fusion, Dreamweaver and other html editors that retrieve files from the server and then save them back to the server after editing is complete. So just where in Google's idiotic scheme of things does the original JavaScript come in that can read so that it can be edited?

I agree that compressing a javascript does make it awkward to tweak at a later data, but I think that the compression process is almost as good as encryption because it takes some unraveling to get the original code in an easy to read form.
