SOPA Protests Fuelled By Pirates

Copyright, which is the only means that authors and artists have to protect their livelihood, is now under fire with the support of some of the largest and most devious organisations. Recent changes to US laws to clarify the interpretation of laws pertaining to piracy and Copyright have been debated and now under attack by all of those in fear of losing their rights to steal and traffic in other peoples intellectual property.

Since a time when the world was oblivious to Copyright law, even though it did exist worldwide, there has been an overwhelmingly large majority of people and entities opposed to author rights. That majority is comprised of all the people who prefer to steal than pay, even if it does deprive the creator of their livelihood. Internet media most affected and most commonly pirated is music and video, but it does not stop there because anything reachable via the Internet is also exploited such as images and information.

All of those people for adequate laws to protect Copyright are mostly artists, authors and resources related to those industries such as publishing houses and their distributors. All of those opposed to the preservation and enforcement of adequate Copyright laws are comprised of every one else in this world. Anyone who does not own, create or work with intellectual property will have no respect for the preservation of it. In fact that amounts to an overwhelming majority of stupid, ignorant and very short-sighted people who while wishing that their entertainment was free, have no concept or understanding that unless its creators can make a living, then their entertainment will disappear. Then they will have nothing.

Current news is reporting that some popular web services are proposing blackouts in favour of a protest against SOPA. One of those services, Wikipedia which is online dictionary, or rather a collection of information mined from other web sites, is joining the protest. Too many Wikipedia editors have been voicing their disapproval of DRM and copy protection for some time, and if anything their recent action should be a warning to the pubic that Wikipedia, while it maintains that its information is unbiased, that they themselves having nothing like that in mind at all. Wikipedia has been campaigning for donations to keep them living the life style to which they have grown accustomed, and having not found sufficient funds, are no doubt trying to win popularity with the masses.

Others to join the protest are Tucows and Google. I find it hard to understand why Tucows would support piracy, unless most of their staff are still under the influence of peer pressure about music downloads. But with Google, it an be expected. In fact Google can be seen as the pirate flagship. From spying on households and business for industrial espionage, popularising themselves by providing indexes to everyones images and media online, to supporting sites that mine other peoples information just to sell more ads, and so. The list is endless. Of course Google does not want to see the success of anything related to Copyright or the protection of intellectual property. Google is the biggest pirate of them all.

The strength of the protesting arguments are a play on keywords that are in fact not really related to the issue. For example in every spiel you will see freedom of speech and limitation of free expression mentioned. However the prevention of piracy can be no more harmful to a persons rights than the prevention of rape or wife bashing. Another part of their spiel is about breaking the Internet which is a lot of hogwash contrived to alarm members of the public not versed in how the internet actually works. Next we hear the Internet should be free being used inappropriately. If indeed the Internet was free of restrictions no-one would be able to get online, download their email or visit their favourite web site. In fact they may be lucky if their computer actually boots up properly.

Come on people. Get real and not so ruddy selfish!

   Dumber than dumb
I noticed that some well known entities protesting against SOPA include Google and Wikipedia, and I can understand why they are afraid of strict controls when their own stock in trade is based on content and references that are Copyrighted material. While some impressionable souls might have been impressed by their stance, I on the other hand see it as dumber than dumb. Both Wikipedia and Google derive their financial support mostly from US based industry, and the industry that is pushing for stricter Copyright control and protection is the US entertainment industry.. the only US industry that has a healthy export. Hollywood exports to every country in the world and quite frankly, it*s the only US product that anyone outside of the US wants.

So next time you are thinking how clever and friendly Wikipedia and Google are.. think again.

Re.. Dumber than dumb, I agree wholeheartedly. I*m not much of a Google fan (nothing but consumer junk) but since SOPA I have had a rethink about the Wikipedia scene. As a Wikipedia editor I noticed an *attitude* rising in discussions related to privacy and intellectual property. At the time I was concerned that perhaps there were too many bludgers working as contributors (with nothing better to do) who were totally absorbed welfare benefits to now any better.

But to see their management commit to a protest? As a publicity stunt they certainly got some attention, but when they are looking for sponsorship from real businesses (bludgers don*t pay for anything), then there will be some red faces.

Now that I have had a better look at Wikipedia… as a dictionary it is merely a collection of found objects. Some of the contributors have attitude and bias and from now on I will do the web research myself.. who needs a bludger*s opinion?

How can it be useless info? Well I do recall that another contributor (with editor powers) once made some damning comments about the original author and integrity of the entity. So I looked at that editor’s work history and found a pattern.. he was apparently more interested in racking up points for work performed without bothering to read the articles properly. But what made it worse was his malformed opinions, claiming to know better than authoritative experts.

Yes, Wikipedia is manipulated by such bigots.
